It is difficult to write about, to put into words, drawing and painting. It is what I do; I draw and paint and, as an adult education art tutor, I teach drawing and painting. Drawing is a joy, a delight, an act of “discovery that is not important because it records what you have seen but because it will lead you on to see”. 1. Painting is more difficult to describe but I like the thought that it is “rooted in our essentially physical nature” and that it is “a tactile, rhythmic and composed engagement with the world beyond ourselves”.2. I try to make work that is real. By this I mean that it is true to the physical reality of its materials, to the qualities of paint and canvas and charcoal and paper. I make paintings, rather than using painting to express ideas or to create illusions and pictures.I work from sketchbook studies. The paintings are reworked and layered seeking to create a visual equivalent rather than a representation.. 1. John Berger, Permanent Red, Methuen 196O 2. John Skinner, www.johnskinner.me.uk
